Marley & Me, a 2008 drama-comedy directed by David Frankel, is based on John Grogan's best-selling memoir of the same name. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston star in this film that charts the journey of the Grogans through marriage, career changes, and parenthood with their lovable but mostly mischievous Labrador Retriever, Marley.
The film gives a very relatable view of family life and the emotional bond between humans and their pets. In fact, the very hallmark of the film is its glaring honesty about the joys, struggles, and inevitable losses that accompany life, quite contrary to what dog films would normally do.
Worldwide upon its release. the film attracted considerable audience engagement, turned commercial, and earned above $240 million at the worldwide box office. Critics conferred praise on the heartwarming tale and the genuine chemistry between Wilson and Aniston. This film truly is a reflection on love, loyalty, and the ephemerality of life's beautiful moments, or a tale about a dog.
Plot Summary
The backdrop is that of John and Jenny Grogan (Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston), a young couple working as journalists in Florida. It is the time for the pair to start thinking about a family, and John's friend Sebastian (Eric Dane) proposes the couple get a dog for a test run in parenting. Enter Marley, an impulsive Labrador Retriever, who in no time proves to be more than what they had bargained for.
He chewed through furniture and was vociferously expelled from obedience school; that was Marley, the world's worst dog. But, with his insanity, he became an indispensable part of the Grogan clan, journeying alongside them through every mirth and sorrow in life.
Through the times that John has faced with disillusionment in his career and through Jenny's hard times with motherhood, Marley was there for their unconditional love and loyalty. The couple had to deal with trying times of sorrow like their miscarriage, but again, the bond with each other and with Marley was their source of strength.
John's career picks up later, moving away from crime-reporting to write a popular column on life with Marley. The family later moves to a country farmhouse where Marley enjoys some peace, but Marley, by now aged, starts suffering a decline in health, which revealed the inevitable.
The climax awfully pulls on John's heart as he is left with no realistic option but to euthanize Marley to alleviate his suffering. He buried Marley in the backyard, at the end reflecting on how profoundly the dog shaped his life.
